Face anonymization how-to

Video Anonymization Checklist Before You Publish

Use this short pre-publication checklist to catch exposed faces, original-file mix-ups, revealing audio, and unsafe cover images in anonymized video.

On this page

Before publishing an anonymized video, check the downloaded file, its audio, and its cover image. Most last-minute mistakes are simple: the wrong version gets uploaded, a face appears after a cut, or a thumbnail comes from the original.

Use this checklist after the face-processing job finishes. It works for a quick social clip as well as a longer edit.

Confirm you have the right file

If several versions look alike, give the accepted one a clear name such as event-recap-public-v3. “Final-final” becomes confusing quickly when somebody asks for another edit.

Watch the whole video once

Play it at normal speed without jumping ahead. This catches unexpected cuts, missing sound, incorrect people being treated, and obvious exposed faces.

Then revisit the harder moments: each person's first appearance, their last appearance, side views, people crossing, mirrors, and the frames after an obstruction. A clean face thumbnail in a face-selection screen does not prove that all those moments are covered.

If you find a problem, write the timestamp before changing anything. That makes the next check much faster.

Listen without watching

Close your eyes or look away for one pass. Can you hear a name, school, address, workplace, or personal detail that the face treatment was meant to protect?

You may choose to remove the original sound, replace a section with narration, or cut the line in your regular editor. Unseen's face effects do not perform voice anonymization.

For an ordinary travel montage, this might take a minute. For a sensitive interview, it can change whether the clip should be shared at all.

Check the rest of the post

Inspect the cover image, captions, title, description, tags, and location information. Avoid naming the person you just hid or tagging the account that identifies them.

If you include a before-and-after image, the “before” must be suitable for public use too. Do not expose the subject to demonstrate that the blur works.

Watch the publishing platform's draft preview if available. Make sure its crop has not made another person's face or a reflected face more prominent.

Record the result in one line

Use a small review note:

File: event-recap-public-v3.mp4. Checked: full playback, entrances, audio, cover. Open issue: none. Reviewer: initials.

If there is an unresolved exposed frame, keep the file out of the publishing folder until it is fixed. The detailed quality-check guide expands this into a reusable timestamp log.

Try it on a short clip

Start with a difficult moment from your video, then inspect the exported result.
