Local vs Cloud Video Anonymization: Which Should You Choose?

Choose between Unseen's free local processing and GPU cloud mode using upload requirements, input limits, device performance, and the actual job.

On this page

Choose Local processing when your video should stay on your device. Choose Cloud processing when uploading is acceptable and you want remote GPU computing to handle the work. Local is free and needs no account; cloud requires sign-in and credits.

Start with that distinction before comparing speed. A faster result does not help if your footage was never allowed to leave the laptop.

When local is the better fit

Local works well for someone who distrusts uploads, a creator handling a short clip, or a team whose media needs to stay on a controlled device.

The browser downloads the processing engine, then works on the file locally. You can prepare the engine before disconnecting, which lets you select the video only after the network is off.

The tradeoff is resource use. Processing competes with other applications for your device's memory and computing time. Keep the tab open and plug in a laptop. Test a representative section if the full video is long.

Local input is capped at roughly 2 GB in this version, even though it has no fixed duration cap.

When cloud is worth considering

Cloud can be useful for a deadline on an underpowered device or a job that is taking too long locally. You upload the file and use credits for processing.

Ordinary anonymization inputs currently have a 500 MB and ten-minute limit. Face swap is cloud-only and has a four-minute duration limit. Check the app's displayed estimate before starting; swap and high-resolution jobs can cost more than ordinary blur.

Do not assume every cloud job is instantly faster. Upload time, service startup, processing, and download all contribute to the total wait. A tiny local job may finish before those overheads pay off.

What if you require deletion after processing?

A no-upload requirement and a deletion requirement are different. Cloud creates a remote handling step, even when a deletion policy applies later.

In cloud mode, Unseen keeps the uploaded video and its results in your gallery so you can download or edit them later, and you can delete a video with everything made from it at any time. If your project needs a firm deletion deadline, delete the video yourself as soon as you have downloaded the result, or use local processing, which never uploads it.

Run a useful comparison

Take the same short, representative clip and record total time to a downloaded result in each acceptable mode. Include the upload and download in cloud timing. Then compare the outputs at the same difficult moments.

This is a practical test for your footage and device, not a universal benchmark. Quality still matters if one option finishes sooner.

When you are ready, open Unseen and deliberately select the mode. Signed-in users may initially land on Cloud processing, so check it rather than assuming the previous local choice carried over.

Try it on a short clip

Start with a difficult moment from your video, then inspect the exported result.
