How to Blur Faces in a Video: A Practical Step-by-Step Guide

Blur every face or keep selected people visible in Unseen. Follow the actual controls, choose local or cloud, and fix common export problems.

On this page

To blur faces in a video, open Unseen, choose Local processing, select your file, choose Blur, and click Blur all. To hide particular people instead, click Select faces, mark their thumbnails Hide, and choose Continue processing. When processing finishes, play the result and use Export video to download it.

Local processing is free and keeps video processing on your device. Cloud processing uploads the file and uses GPU computing; it requires an account and credits. Neither choice removes the need to look at the result.

Blur everyone or choose individual people?

Use Blur all for a street scene where nobody needs to remain visible. It skips the face-selection screen, so you do not have to click through a crowd.

Use Select faces when your presenter should stay visible, one guest wants privacy, or you want different effects for different people. The face list uses two labels: Hide means the face will be treated; Keep means it stays visible. If that sounds backwards while you are clicking quickly, read the badges before continuing.

A person can appear in more than one face entry after a cut or a major change of angle. Check every thumbnail that looks like them. The one-person tutorial covers this in more detail.

Choose the processing mode before starting

In the import screen, explicitly select Local processing if avoiding an upload matters. Signing in can initially switch the app to cloud, so check the selected card even if you used local mode last time.

For ordinary local footage, start with Thorough. Use Maximum if people move quickly or pass through the frame briefly. It performs more frequent detection and takes longer. These presets apply to local processing; they are not cloud speed settings.

Keep the browser tab open while the job runs. On a laptop, connect power and avoid starting other demanding tasks. If the file cannot load, first check whether it plays in your browser; the filename extension alone does not establish codec support.

Choose an effect that fits the clip

Blur softens facial detail. Pixelate replaces it with blocks. Black bar covers the detected region with a solid treatment. Emoji is useful for an informal family or social clip.

Unseen does not expose a numeric blur-strength slider in this version. If Blur looks too weak, try a different method. Changing the effect cannot fix a face that was never detected.

Check the download, especially where people enter

On the result screen, watch the video before clicking Export video. Then open the downloaded file too. Check the first appearance of each person, head turns, people crossing, and the moments after a camera cut. Listen for audio that you expected to keep.

If a face flashes uncovered, note the time. Rerun local detection with Maximum if appropriate. If the miss persists, click Fix a missed face on the result screen, draw a box on the face at that moment, track it through the shot, and export again (step by step). Repeatedly changing Blur to Pixelate will not solve missing coverage.

Once the file looks right, use that downloaded copy in your publishing app. Keep the original separately so you can make a different edit later.

Try it on a short clip

Start with a difficult moment from your video, then inspect the exported result.
